Translation

1–2.The 14th day of the 10th month in an Earth Hare year (1939). The subject of this letter is as follows. We present our situation (lit. happiness and hardship) to his Majesty the Great Gorkha King.

2–3. Howevermuch the expenditure on the wages for the number of months served by the assistants (zhabs zhus) of the Thak subba and the Important Men (bhalādmi) of Baragaon appointed by the subba, as set out in the [relevant] list,

3–4. as soon as the subba’s invoice arrives, 200 rupees must be brought to this assembly [by its constituents]. If anyone does not come he must pay a fine according to the terms set out in the earlier written agreement. This document is signed [to indicate that] it has been passed from hand to hand among all [the representatives of] the eighteen communities.

Commentary

4. spur stis: this probably stands for the Nep. pūrji “slip of paper, note”, rather than pūrti, “invoice”.
7. rta shil (Nep. tapsil): in this list, as so often, Sangdag alone in Baragaon is not represented.
