Translation

The 6th day of the 4th month in a Water Bird year. From bZang po and Nyi ma Tshe ring, two brothers from Monthang, and Nyi ma Tshe ring and his son, the four of us, to the nobles and commoners of Baragaon in Lower Lo: here we present a truthful account of how each of us, with his wicked hands, stole property from Lower Lo. The account of Zangpo and his brother We two brothers decided that we would go to Nyeshang. We took 5 tam with us. When we reached Samar, we drank 1  am’s worth of beer. After arriving at the foot of the poplar tree in Tshug, we met Tshe ring rdo rje and his son, from Monthang. When we told them that we two brothers intended to go to Nyeshang, Tshe ring rdo rje said, “You need not go to Nyeshang. If the four of us should team up and travel with the same intention, we could steal whatever we can find in Te and Tshug and move on.” And so we teamed up. In the middle of the night we broke into the elders’ quarters in the house of Tshe ring rdo rje of Tshug. Those two, the father and son, went into the inner storeroom and took out some belongings. Outside, they told us to take it, and we did take it; it is true that we stole it and kept (lit. ate) it. This is the list of items. In addition to the four zo ba of rice which we ate, there were two sacks of rice, three pairs of silver bangles, one long silver earring, two necklaces of amber and coral, five large and small turquoises, one silk shirt, three squares of Kashmiri cotton, a quantity of butter equivalent in weight to one zo ba of barley, one silver brooch, one gold amulet box, three pieces of sardonyx (chong), one square of silk, and one brass pot. It is true that we stole these things, and we two, bZang po and his brother, set our signature to this. Concerning the things which we, Tshe ring rdo rje, father and son, stole with our evil hands, and planned to sell in Lo: from the house of Zhabs tog of Phelag we stole one pot and one narrow- necked rice-cooker (rta za li < Nep. tasali). The tasali is still in our possession, but the pot we sold to Nyima of Tshering of Jomsom. bZang po and his brother stole one pair of trousers, a zo ba measure, one goat-hair sack and one donkey-sack (le po < sle po?) from Te, but we do not know from whose house in Te. I, Chos ’phel, stole two pots from Te and sold them to Kun dga’ rab brtan of Tshug. From the house of Phun tshog don grub in Taye, I stole one mattock and sold it to the elder daughter-in-law of Tharu in Jomsom. Together with that I stole two zo ba of rice and ate that for my meals. I stole one chuba from the house of Nyi ma tshe thar of Te, and hid it among some junipers on the trail above Bena. One pot, one prayer flag cloth, three back blankets and three balls of fat were stolen [by us?] from the house of Tshe dbang srid thar of Tangye. The pot and the prayer flag cloth were sold by Jambela (or “by the hand of Byams pa”) to Kunga Trashi of Gelung. Jambela sold the back blanket to Pemba Tsheten of Tshosher. One goat was stolen from Samphel of Dzong Lungbebug, and its meat was eaten by Jamyang of Tsarang and his two sons, and Pemba and his son, all together. Bele of Monthang stole one pair of long silk underwear from Taye, and he has kept them for himself. I would fight a war over thematter [to defend my allegation]. Bele of Monthang stole two pots from Te and is keeping them in the house of Zla ba bsam grub of Monthang. bZang po and his brother stole one ritual shawl and are keeping it with Padma dbang ’dus. They have stolen one brass cauldron from the house of Nyi ma Don grub of Taye and have sold it to Kun dga’ rab brtan of Tshug. A Ladakhi (? or someone named La bdag pa?) stole one goat-hair sack from the house of mGar ba of Te and gave it to us, and this we have at home. Bele’s son and the silversmith Trashi stole one pot from Zla ba of Phelak, and one pot from the house of Ye shes mkha’ ’gro of Kag, and these are in their homes. They stole one pot from Te and sold it to sPen pa lha mo of Shisa [in Lo]. They stole one pot from the house of Tshe dbang nor bu of Te and sold it to the daughter-in-law of Deaf rDo rje of Pingkar [in Lo]. They stole one jangcung back blanket (see notes) from the house of Ye shes of Gyaga and sold it to Kun dga’ rab brtan of Tshug. They stole two pots from the house of Karma rgyal mtshan of Taye; they sold one potto the nun in the family of Kun dga’ rab brtan of Tshug, and the other one they sold to Kun dga’ rab brtan himself. Byams pa stole [an unnamed object] from the house of bsTan ’dzin of Gyaga and sold it to Serkyi sgrol ma of Tsele. dPal bzang Tshe ring of Gara stole a pair of checked long underwear from Kun dga’ dbang mo of Taye, and they are being worn by his wife (nang tshang). He (?) stole one plate from the house of Phun tshogs Don grub of Taye and sold it to bSod nams don grub of Pingkar. He stole one pot from Taye and sold it to dBang mo of Tsele. He stole one pot from the house of Nyi ma bsam grub of Gyaga and sold it to Karma tshe dbang of Tsele. He stole one length of tightly woven woollen cloth (putruk see notes) from the house of Blo bzang of Gyaga, and sold it to Lobsang …pa (one syllable not clear) of Monthang Chorag. My younger stole one plate and sold it to the student of a lama (?). It is true that we sold the property that is detailed above, and we, father and son, both set our signatures to this.

Furthermore, it is true that, while trading with the nomads in winter, we stole from the house of Byams pa a dzo belonging to someone from Dzong, and ate it. Concerning the above, it is true that I shall not contest any judgment that is passed on me, and I, bZang po, set my thumbprint; Nyi ma Tshe ring (thumbprint); Tshe ring rdo rje (thumbprint); Chos ’phel (thumbprint).
