Tibet-Qing relations, late 18th to late 19th Centuries

Fabienne Jagou’s research will focus on relations between China and Tibet from the end of the late 18th century. The focus of this component will be Chinese administrative documents, as well as Tibetan items originating from the Manchu representatives (the Ambans) and their Lhasa office, relating to the Nepal-Tibet wars of 1788 and 1791 and their aftermath. These sources will provide valuable insights into the adminstrative, economic and social reforms introduced to Tibet by the Manchus in the wake of these wars. Beyond this analysis, the investigation will address the issue of communications – between Tibetan and Manchu officials and between Tibetan and Manchu institutions (respectively in Lhasa and Beijing) – and the matter of the translation between the Tibetan and Chinese administrative languages.
